Sri Chinmoy Peace Race for the United Nations: Two-mile races held in over 140 cities around the globe to promote United Nations Day – October

Members of the Peace Meditation Group have supported or participated in a number of these events over the years since 1987.

Runners in Moscow competed with runners in New York City. Pia Ruotsalainen in Pori, Finland, tied for first place worldwide with Katy McMillan in Edinburgh, Scotland. Neither of them left their home city.

This is the Sri Chinmoy International Peace Race. The two-mile race honors the United Nations every year, with each birthday of the United Nations witnessing a new run.

In 1993, over ‘1 ,1 00 runners in some 40 cities around the world competed for worldwide awards.

The Peace Race creates world cooperation in many ways, with the winners list spanning the globe.
Winners included runners from Moscow and Volgograd, Russia; Pori, Finland; Nikolaev Ukraine; Payneham, Australia; Vaasa, Finland; Edinburgh, Scotland; London, England; West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and Pawtucket, Rhode lsland.

The former Soviet Republics have made this race a favorite. Over one half of all runners participating in 1993 were in the former Soviet Republics. Andrei Shelagin from Moscow took the top ment prize in 9:24.fop women’s winners for 1 993 were Pia Ruotsalainen and Katy McMillan in 1 1 :06, of Pori, Finland, and Edinburgh, ‘/Scotland, respectively.
