Sudhahota Carl Lewis, UN Food and Agriculture Organization Goodwill Ambassador and “Olympian of the Century,” holds the U Thant Peace Award trophy presented to him by Sri Chinmoy on 7 May 1997, at an event held at Sudhahota’s home in Houston.

Following is the transcript of Sri Chinmoy Presenting the Award:

Dear Carl, dear Sudhahota, for a number of years our Peace Meditation Group at the united Nations has offered a special award in the name of our beloved UN Secretary-General U Thant. U Thant was a supremely chosen pilot of the United Nations. He served the heart-home of the world-body with a heart of prayer and a life of self-giving. His was an exemplary life of inner consecration and outer dedication.

Today we wish to offer our U Thant Peace Award to you, dear Sudhahota.

You are a gold-medal champion in both the inner world and the outer world. You are the standard-bearer of the Olympian oneness-perfection-game. Your superlative capacities you have devoted to the service of your brothers and sisters everywhere. You have proved to the world at large that soulful prayer, cheerful self-discipline, powerful determination, self-giving transcendence-competition and world-embracing heart-expansion can and will create abiding and fulfilling peace in the human family.

This humble award we have offered to a few other remarkable peace-lovers and peace-servers, including President Gorbachev, President Mandela and Mother Teresa.

Today, we wish to honour our hero-champion Carl Lewis with our U Thant Peace Award
