The performance followed the Keynote Address by Dr. Betty Williams, 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate, starting at 30 minutes into the UN TV webcast of the event, and lasting until 42.15 minutes, when the President said, “On behalf of you all, I’d like to thank Sri Chinmoy: The Peace Meditation at the United Nations for that beautiful performance, and for the Culture of Peace for which they have stood for so long.”

Ms. Nilima Silver, Programme Coordinator for The Peace Meditation at the United Nations, introduces the Singers.

In the afternoon session, the Panel Discussion was moderated by H.E. Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the United Nations; Chair of the UN General Assembly Drafting Committee for the Declaration and Programme of Action on the Culture of Peace (1998-1999); and Founder, Global Movement for The Culture of Peace. Six minutes into the programme, the Representative of India, Mr. Srinivas Prasad, stated: “As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, India has been the home to a continuous stream of great spiritual teachers and thinkers throughout the centuries who have spread the message of a culture of peace. Starting with the hymns of the Vedas and leading to Lord Buddha and Gandhi-ji the message of Indian civilization is: a culture of peace. This was highlighted today in the morning by the beautiful songs of peace by Sri Chinmoy we heard. India is deeply conscious and proud of this heritage and remains committed to a culture of peace.”
