 Sri Chinmoy Poetry Festival 2010

An exploration of life through poetry, music and art

Guest Speaker Edward Hirsch

Edward Hirsch, an American poet and critic, is the author of many books, including the best-selling How to Read a Poem and Fall ill Love with Poetry. He is President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. In insightful and compelling fashion, he makes the art of poetry accessible to all.

Welcome to the Sri Chinmoy Poetry Festival 2010.

Sri Chinmoy was a poet and a lover of poetry. A deeply spiritual man with many talents, he once noted, “My poetry and spirituality are inseparable. I was born to be a poet; I was born to be a God-lover.” His poetry ranged from the lyrical to the tightly compressed, and breathtakingly captured the experiences of the spiritual seeker searching for his Goal.

Born in 1931 Sri Chinmoy spent his childhood years in Chittagong, eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh), his youth and young adulthood in Pondicherry, India and, since 1964, in New York City, from which he travelled the globe.Through his poetry, music, art, prayers, meditations and love for humanity, he spread the message of hope, harmony and oneness at the United Nations and throughout the world.

Tonight we pay tribute, not just to Sri Chinmoy’s soul stirring poetic off’erings, but to the genre he loved so well: poetry itself.

We are grateful to all those present.

There was a time when I stumbled and stumbled,

But now I only climb and climb beyond

And far beyond my Goal’s endless Beyond

And yet my Captain commands: “Go on, go on! ”

My Flute. Poem 49

Beyond speech and mind,

Into the river of ever-effulgent Light

My heart dives.

Today Thousands of doors,

Closed for millennia,

Are opened wide.

Ordinary,

Extraordinary.
