Peace Run for the United Nations, an 18-mile commemorative relay run

from the site of the first UN Headquarters in Lake Success, Long Island,

to New York Headquarters 3 April, 1993

RAIN OR SHINE • NO ENTRANCE FEE

SATURDAY, 3 APRIL 1993

People of many countries running together and carrying flags of the LIN and its Member States, symbolizing the spirit of cooperation as nations strive along the road of peace.

START: 9 a.m. – UNISYS Headquarters, Lake Success, Long Island (former home of the United Nations). Parking available at start.

COURSE: 18.5 miles – Marcus Ave. west

Little Neck Parkway north•Northern Boulevard west’ (brief stop at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park – site of early sessions of the LIN General Assembly)’ enter Manhattan by the Queensboro Bridge • 2nd Ave. south’ 42nd Street east’ 1st Avenue north.

LAST MILE: 1.10 p.m. – 2nd Ave at 59th St., Manhattan.

FINISH: 1.30 p.m. – United Nations Headquarters, Manhattan.

LOGISTICS: The Peace Run is not a race. Runners stay together in one group with police escort. You may join at any point along the route (see schedule opposite) and run as far as you wish. Pace is moderate. For safety reasons, runners who cannot maintain a ten minute per mile pace are requested to please participate only in the last mile (see above). Refreshments at stopping points and at finish. Vehicles with water and space for passengers and personal belongings will accompany the group at all times. Rain or shine!

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration preferred, postmarked by Friday, 26 March. No entrance fee. Please Indicate flag preference – UN or any country. We will supply miniature flags. T-shirts available for $7.

DIRECTIONS TO START (FROM QUEENS):

Long Island Expressway East to Exit 33 Right at traffic fight onto Lakeville Rd. Left at fourth traffic IY2ht onto Marcus Ave. Run begins at UNISYS parking lot on right.

Grand Central Pkwy. East (becomes

Northern State Pkwy. at Nassau County Line) to Exit 25 – Lakeville Rd. Right at traffic light onto Marcus Ave. Peace Run begins at UNISYS parking lot on left, opposite State Police (before first traffic light).

RIDES TO START: Rides available from the UN or Jamaica, Queens, free of charge. Must reserve space by Friday, 2 April. We will confirm rides by phone the day before event. Rides also available after event to start or Jamaica, Queens if requested day of event.
