This association began in the 1970’s when Ambassador Illueca was representing his country at the United Nations as the Permanent Representative of Panama.
Even when he was not serving in New York, his encouraging friendship with Sri Chinmoy and the members of the Peace Meditation Group has continued over many years:

Message to Sri Chinmoy and Members of the Peace Meditation Association
in Response to Birthday Greeting Telex sent to Panama, 17 September 1990 to the Offices of Dr. Illueca.
Phone Conversation Dr. Jorge Illueca, former President of Panama, President of the 38th Session of the General Assembly and former Ambassador of Panama to the United Nations to Adhiratha Keefe of Peace Meditation group at the United Nations.
Dr. I. I wanted to convey to Sri Chinmoy through you my gratitude and for this beautiful message. It was very moving
A.K. This is a day we always remember, especially Sri Chinmoy who called me about this.
DR. I. Many times I have been thinking of him and all of you. Today, tell him today something happened here that was very significant, We have here a National Flower, It is called the ………….. Flower”. We have a plant by my home, it has been there for about ten years and today it was for the first time blossoming, flowering with this beautiful flower that has inside of the flower like a little pigeon (dove?). Yes, (and a chuckle, sweet laugh). I was very amazed and very impressed by this fact and at the same time very happy that, because at the same time it was something very· natural. (another laugh)
Please tell him about this. And then I received your beautiful message and the message of Sri Chinmoy and the Meditation Group and it has made me very happy.
Tell him that I feel that I am in Harmony with that when I receive messages like yours.
A.K. Well we always remember when you were here and I think the wisdom that you gave us, as he said it stays in our hearts.
Dr. I. Thank you this is a feeling that I share with Sri Chinmoy and all of you. Please give my best regards to Sri Chinmoy and also your colleagues and all our dear friends of the Meditation Group

And thank you for calling, I just called to convey to you and to Sri Chinmoy my feelings and tell Sri Chinmoy and your friends and colleagues of the meditation Group that I feel that you are like a spiritual torch that I saw (or I feel) the best feelings, the best sentiments, that we have in the very depths of our hearts.

Dr.I Thanks again Adhiratha, My best wishes. I expect to come to New York sometime perhaps sometime in December or the beginning of January and then I will let you know in advance so I would have the opportunity to see Sri Chinmoy and to meet with all of you.
