1987 Global Peace Run Opening Ceremony a Big Success! 27 April

on April 27 with live coverage by NBC’s TODAY SHOW.
Many Members of the Peace Meditation at he United Nations were present for the festive occassion…
- The torch was lit by Sri Chinmoy at 8 am at Battery Park.
- The torch was passed and then carried to the World Trade Center accompanied by hundreds of runners and a police escort.
- Thousands cheered as pop singer early Simon received the torch at the Trade Center and carried it onto the stage.
- Our ceremony began at 8:37 AM with an audience of 8 million viewers of the TODAY SHOW joining us.
- Mokshagun Clarence Clemons and Narada Michael Walden performed America the Beautiful.
- Then Mokshagun passed the Peace Torch to Sri Chinmoy who offered a statement on peace (see below).

- Narada Michael Walden received the torch from Sri Chinmoy and
- lit the flames of torches held by
- seven runners from Australia, United Kingdom, Spain, West Germany, Zimbabwe, Japan and Canada and
- UN Ambassadors from nine countries.
Hundreds of telephone calls flooded The Peace Run office
directly following the broadcasts of interviews by Mokshagun and Narada on
- NBC’s TODAY SHOW,
- WABC-TV’s The Morning Show, and on
- MTV Music Television.
Articles on the Peace Run appeared in all three New York City papers.
Mokshagun has been a real hero of the heart in his publicity effort for The Peace Run. In one day he did three television and two newspaper interviews. He starred in the Opening Day ceremonies and we are hoping for a short piece in the next issue of TIME Magazine.
A PBS-TV special, “The Peace Run,” hosted by Mokshagun Clarence Clemons, airs May 14 at 2pm EDT (in NYC on WNET-TV-13).
