There were two articles in this issue of Secretariat News related to the Meditation Group at the UN and the leader Sri Chinmoy. See excerpt of details below

ON LEARNING ( a language)

I am studying French in the UN Language Programme. At a recent meeting of the Meditation Group at which questions on education were being put to the Group’s leader, Sri Chinmoy, I asked:

What is the quickest way to learn the language of another country?

Sri Chinmoy: “The quickest way to learn the language of a different country is to love the soul of that particular country. Then you have to love the heart 0f that  country and finally you have to love the consciousness of that country.

When the consciousness; heart and soul of the country are loved, immediately the outer vehicle of the country – which is the language – tries to befriend the student who wants to learn it. “

U Thant Programme  in NY and

The Group held a programme in tribute to U Thant last month.

Ambassador Rossides of Cyprus, Ambassador Vinci of Italy and Deputy Under-Secretary- General Robert Muller spoke movingly about the late Secretary -General.

Sri Chimnoy, Group Leader, presented Mr. and Mrs. Myint – U, U Thant’s daughter and son-in-law, with a copy of his recent book U Thant: Divinity’s Smile and Humanity’s Cry, which contains passages about U Thant by Sri Chinmoy, ambassadors Rossides and Vinci, Ambassador Ole Alg~rd of Norway, Under-Secretary-General C. V. Narasimhan, his Deputy Robert Muller and others. The book will soon be in the Dag Hammarskjold Library.

News of the programme for U Thant was broadcast in Burma the following day.

Assistance  at Prayer Service in Washington D.C.

At the invitation of the President Carter / Vice President Mondale Inaugural Committee, the Meditation Group served as ushers at the Inauguration Day early morning prayer service at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C.

Wearing pink or blue blazers in the sub-freezing temperature, the Group gathered at 6:30 a. m. to pass programmes, seat people and generally help with a crowd which grew to 5, 000.
